Happy Foodie Friday!! This week were heading to the islands... not really but close enough. To Trini Citi Roti Shop in Queens, NY. This restaurant gives you every bit of authentic food from Trinidad and Tobago. The eatery is open 6 days a week for the early birds and night owl, opening at 6 AM.
Have patience when placing your order as the lines can start at the entrance of the establishment but moves quickly. Not sure what to order ahead of time, check their site online or grab a menu when you enter as a few are placed on the ATM machine inside of the establishment.
.
Once entering the restaurant, the main line to place your order is on the left. If you go on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday You MUST get a Bake & Shark which is hot fried bread (bake) and shark meat with a variety of condiments. My bake and shark consisted of Trini pepper sauce, Garlic Sauce, Kuchela Mango Chutne, Tamarind sauce, Cole Slaw, and Pineapple to top it off. This combination is delish from start to finish, yet very spicy with the number of condiments I had on mine. Let’s not forget the sweetness of the pineapple.
None the less worth every bite, you can choose what condiments you prefer.
.
I got three Doubles with shrimp and one with saltfish. Now if you’re not familiar with Doubles they’re one of the most popular eats in Trinidad. Doubles are 2 bara (hot flat fried dough), filled with curried chickpeas, chutney (spices or savory condiment) and tamarind sauce. You can also add different forms of proteins to Doubles such as Saltfish, Shrimp, Chicken, Duck, Beef and etc. You can customize the Doubles to your liking, veggies are also available to add as well.
.
The bara dough is soft and melts in your mouth with the chickpeas and shrimp. I highly recommend trying the doubles. I always get doubles with tamarind sauce, its sweet and peppery. To drink I got a Solo Ginger Beer, when I tell you the amount of ginger you taste its remarkably refreshing and crisp it will clear your throat.
.
I love the authenticity of the Roti Shop, all Caribbean’s know about Shirley cookies, Pepper Sauces, Sorrel, Mauby, Sea Moss and Ginger Beer you just can’t go wrong. From Roti’s, Doubles, Peas and Rice with dumplings, Vegetable dishes such as Pumpkin, Curry Mango, Cabbage Roti you can miss out on this eatery.
