Happy Foodie Friday!! The experience @rasplantbased was a unique and cultural one. Ras Plant is an organic farm to table plant based Ethiopian restaurant in Brooklyn, NY. Now if you've never experienced a Farm to Table eatery let me break it down for you. Farm to table concept is when fresh produce or livestock from local farms are cooked or prepared the same day.
This was my first time eating Ethiopian food and I loved every bit. Yet the reservation was last minute it was worth it. I went with friends on Labor Day which was a plus! This restaurant is open on Mondays actually their open every day, which is rare. Upon entering the tunes were spinning with a Live DJ playing sounds of Soca and Hip Hop. The wait was short as indoor and outdoor seating are both available.
The decor is beautiful with colorful murals on the walls, suspended lights above the bar and dim lighting throughout the space setting the mood to be calm yet vibrant.
Now lets get into the eats and drinks shall we.. To drink I had the Ginger Guava Lemonade which was a lovely mixture of ginger, plantation rum, pineapple and guava. I wish the beverage had more ginger but otherwise it was okay. The second drink I had was incredible.. if you love bourbon this is the drink of choose!!
The drink Take It Easy is the one to indulge in, not only was is smooth but the presentation adds the final touch of elegance. This drink was bitter yet sweet as the Makers Mark and lavender syrup and vegan bitters blend together with a touch of lemon. Ohh this was the best by far, one of my top drinks by far.
This appetizer too good you might want to take one to go. The Mashed Avocado is fresh and flavorful!! The presentation is a delight as tomatoes complement the avocado yet finished off with the injera crips as the exterior. The house vinaigrette and the Injera Crisps, this was a first... the crips are crunchy with just the right amount salt and texture it all melts in your mouth. You'll be asking for more injera crisps in no time. My only draw back is wanting more avocado but that goes with any avocado dish you want more until you realize you did have a generous amount.
For the entree, if this your first time as the waiter for suggestions. I was torn between two dishes but finally made the decision. The Mercato platter was the spicer of the two platter options. The platters arrange from 5 dishes all on one plate. The options for the platters can be mixed and matched to your liking. So if you prefer a mix of spicy and mellow go for it. The Mercato platter ranges from five items - Yatakilt( cabbage, carrot, onion, and bell pepper), Gomen (Braised Collard & sautéed onions), Missir (Slow Simmered Red Lentil Stew) - Shiro (Creamy ground Chickpeas & Intricate Spice Blend), and last but not least the Fasolia ( String bean, Carrots, and Caramelized Onions.
Looking at it you think it's an easy meal to finish... oh no. Plus I clearly forgot to mention it comes with rice as well. The entire dish was incredible. My favorite dishes on the platter was Yatakilt, Shiro, Fasolia, & Gomen. With each bite this dish gets spicer as the flavors increase yet blend together.
The staff was helpful and provided great suggestions for new comers and return customers alike. I highly recommend checking them out. I'll be back for sure.
