Happy Foodie Friday!! Take a trip to the Caribbean well at least experience the vibe and food as we check out Miss Lily's in the East Village 7A location. This spot is a NY gem on the corner of Avenue A in NYC you'll spot this restaurant instantly with the bright colors commanding your attention. The sounds of reggae and soca bring the beat of the Caribbean to your ears.
Upon arriving the option to eat outside was available but with the interior so gravitating from the outside I had to eat in. We had reservations which elevated the wait which could take up to 10 minutes depending on the time you arrive. The interior is a spectacular display of Caribbean culture, from vibrant colors and patterns to lights with natural tones of tan throughout. Bright yellows and blue detail the bar electrify the room with the sounds of Soca and Reggae playing thorough the speakers.
Wether you eat inside or out the experience elevates with the service and the food. Shall we eat... I think so. To quench our thirst the Ginger Beer. This Ginger beer is homemade that is fresh yet potent. The essences of ginger instantly intensifies with each sip. You can't beat homemade ginger beer, get this when you go.
For the appetizers we decided on the Cod Fish Fritters and Jerk Fries. The cod fish fritters come with lime spice dip which was a refreshing kick with a gratifying taste. Now if you've had cod fish fritters in the past it can be a hit or miss with little to no cod but tons of dough. Thankfully that wasn't the issue here. The Jerk Fries were a unique play on french fries as they were seasoned to perfection. Peppery yet favorable and crisp with exterior yet soft with each bite.
Now on to the main dishes! Vegetarian roti !! Omg this was incredible. Not only was the roti huge enough to share with multiple people. The mix of vegetables including chickpeas, peas, red green peppers, squash, and spinach. All wrapped in roti skin with a spicy gravy. In true Jamaican style the dish is remarkable and a sweet enjoyment of Caribbean cuisine.
Jerk chicken roti is a full roti dish, matching in size to its counterpart the vegetarian roti. The version of the roti includes jerk chicken, cabbage, and rice. It can be shared or taken home for a meal the next day. I was able to indulge in a piece with the right amount of spice it was truly delightful.
Banana pudding— yooo this is unreal. How smooth the pudding is with banana flavor with each bite. The two vanilla cookies give and added texture you didn’t think was necessary.
The fluffy pudding and Banana slices in the middle of the puddling great.
For the first time I decided to take a dessert to got. Yes you've read that correctly. The Coconut Cream Rum Cake... Lawdddd ( yes the exaggeration is vailed). Presented with a special item.. a shot of Baileys to pour over the slice or you can take the shot alone. I suggest to pour it on the cake as it intensifies flavors instantly. Your slice will be grand so don't worry it can be shared or not. You're choice wither way.
The cake is layered with rum cake, cream and coconut shaving on the top. The rum is prevalent with each bite is naturally sweet as each flavor blends and the soft decadent textures melt in your mouth. This cake stands alone and exceeds the notion of a typical rum cake.
Locations available in New York City, Dubai and Negril. If you take food to go you'll see a QR code on the bag. You'll be in for a treat as the QR Code unlocks a Caribbean playlist curated by the Miss Lillys team. I will be back and suggest you check it out too.
