Mert's Heart & Soul

Updated: Mar 9, 2022

Happy Foodie Friday Ya’ll, hope everyone had a productive week but ready to eat. This week we’re heading to Mert’s Heart and Soul located in the Uptown area in Charlotte, NC. This soul food restaurant is a staple in the Queen City since 1998. The eatery is known for authentic soul food and history with photos of legendary artists and Playbills signed by the cast of a large variety of plays.

Upon entering hand sanitizer is required and you’ll have the option to sit inside or outside. I went for lunch and let me tell you it’s best get here early as patrons quick filled the restaurant. This menu has options for everyone, whether you in the mood for a classic Po Boy, Southern Fried Chicken with all the sides, or Veggie Plate you won’t go wrong with any option.

.

Let’s get into the food shall we.! To drink I had the Tiger Woods y’all ! Which is lemonade and tea.. sounds like a very sweet mix but if you un-sweetened tea the combination is just right. The food here is so good I had to take some to go.

The Veggie Plate was our appetizer of choice, this dish is your choice of three options ranging from sixteen choices of Veggie options. I choose Potato Salad, Collard Greens, and Seasoned Rice.. omg this was so good. The collard greens were extremely fresh and moist with onions and tomatoes. The season rice wasn’t my favorite but the potato salad, whew this hit as you get a taste of the mustard in this one.

.

I had cornbread on the side. THIS IS A MUST!!! Best cornbread I’ve had, it was soft and literally melts in your mouth and will begin break apart in your hand as you take a bite. The entrée was the Mert’s Famous Salmon Cakes off of the Daily Fixins section. I wasn’t impressed with the Salmon cakes, they were light yet soft. The sauce which comes with the dish is spicy .. don’t say I didn’t warn you.

This dish comes with two sides, I got the Collard Greens again along with home fries (potatoes), which were okay, not by favorite either. I will visit again to try the Po Boy and another dish on the menu. Hands down the service was great and the atmosphere was warm felt like a family home you don’t wait to leave. The Cornbread and Collard Greens are by far top notch.
