Happy foodie Friday!! This week were checking out Huey’s Southern Café on River Street in Savannah, GA. We went here for breakfast to get authentic soul food from this peach state and the sister state New Orleans. If you’ve ever been to NOLA and are looking for a reminder of the food look no further.
.
The restaurant is located on the River Street which is along the board of the Savannah River. It can be tricky to get there as the street is on a lower level then the main road. You can take the historical steps down (at your own risk) or walk down the cobble stone path which I feel is much safer. If neither of these options are for you can take the elevator down.
.
If you go early in the morning its truly a beautiful sight to see as the street has tons of eateries, hotels, and antique shops. Reservations are not required but it’s a first come first serve basis. The establishment is luminated from floor to ceiling windows, classic wooden chairs and marble tables. From dishes such as creating your own Omelette to signature ones from NOLA such as Shrimp Creole, Po Boy Sandwich and the world-famous Beignets it’s nothing but straight southern vibes here.
.
For starters I had the Savannah Sour drink which is a bourbon with honey suckle which was delightfully refreshing. So much I got the drink twice. For an appetizer I had the Cajun Gumbo ohhh my goodness it was succulent with the right about of seasoning, it was slightly spicy but not unbearable. The sauce is thick with a combination of chicken, sausage, tomatoes, rice and onions. This dish is filling if you prefer to get a meal to eat after get the cup size instead of the bowl.
I had the Create Your Own Omelette with bacon, onions and spinach. It was too good especially with hot sauce. The sides consist of potatoes and toast both were scrumptious. The potatoes were soft and melted once your tongue hits it. The toast was warm with crisp edges. I could barely finish the meal. I was too full try the beignets but will try them next time I go.
